The Future of Costa Rica: Leading Biofuel Production
Over the years, terms like construction, development and real estate have failed to take into consideration the words sustainability and environmental well-being. In fact, so much so that infrastructural development tends to take place at the cost of natural resource depletion. Fast forward to 2012 and sustainable, eco-friendly development is at the forefront of modern day progression. Blame it on increased awareness of climate change or on the fact that humans have found this new appreciation for nature but biofuel production is the newest craze to hit Costa Rica!
Jet fuel’s future on the front burner
COMMERCE CITY — The future of jet fuel brews in a maze of pipes and tanks at the Rentech Energy Technology Center, not far from Denver International Airport.
Not looking much different from the traditional refinery next door, the Rentech demonstration facility can produce up to 400 gallons of synthetic jet fuel or ultra-low-sulfur diesel a day.
The Rentech fuel, and others like it, are receiving increased attention from airlines as they look for ways to reduce dependence on fossil fuel, cut costs and minimize their environmental impact.
Biofuel Research and Development Project
United Biofuels of America (UBA) and Agronegocios Costa Rica para el mundo; conducted a research alliance to develop agronomic models in the cultivation of Jatropha curcas-tempate. The intent of this important collaboration is to develop different models of farm agronomic parceling 5000 m2 under a model of professional technical research and monitoring. In order to document and develop a technical and economical model production, environmentally sustainable and responsible.
Costa Rican Company is selected in Top 25 Energy Entrepreneurs
Daniel Yepez of United Biofuels of America (UBA) is one of an elite few to be selected by Shell Oil sponsored program called Energy Entrepreneurs.
UBA is a biofuel development and advisory organization based in Costa Rica. While it has numerous biofuel initiatives in outreach and planning, commercialization and deployment, and research and development, these initiatives are part of the Million Gallon Challenge, a goal to produce 1 million gallons of green diesel per day.
Jatropha, Good for the Farmers
The UN’s food and agriculture arm today advocated the use of jatropha for producing bio-diesel and said the crop can help farmers improve their financial condition in dry areas.
“Using the energy crop jatropha for bio-diesel production could benefit poor farmers, particularly in semi-arid and remote areas of developing countries,” said a report published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
